Specifications
Planet will support education practitioners in effective use of participatory media ("web2.0"), by collaboratively developing a pattern language. In order to do that, we will develop a set of tools and associated practices. These tools and practices will be developed in tandem through a collaborative, participatory, user-centred iterative process.
The immediate implication of this process is that we will kick-start development by identifying an existing open-source platform which addresses a substantial subset of our requirements, and putting it to use. This platform will be configured according to our pattern-development Methodology. As we engage users in this endeavour, they will inform us in iterative design of the Methodology, the functionality and the user interface.
Organisation of this space
Specific, self-contained, reusable modules are listed as projects. The Site spec deals with the structure of this site, including all spaces. The Methodology spec elaborates the maner by which patterns are developed, the manner by which supporting software is developed, and the manner by which both are evaluated. The Functional spec discusses the required and desired features for the Planet system. The UI spec complements the functional spec by describing the visual and interactive manifistation of all features. The Environment spec considers the chosen wiki platform, the hosting setup and the development tools we use. This is pretty much a done deal, as we are now hosted here. It is retained for historical reasons. The Patterns-Exchange group hosts a proposal for a spec for a semantic scheme for pattern languages. The API provides interested paties with an easy to use tool for accessing pattern information.
